What Are Essential Oils Anyway?

Pure essential oils are all-natural, pure extract, plant-based medicines that are 50-70 times more powerful than herbs. They have been used all throughout history for their powerful and effective health and healing properties.

When you breathe in the beautiful aroma of the jasmine flower, or a rose, that wonderful scent you’re smelling is the essence of jasmine or rose.

Once this aromatic essence is extracted from the plant (via steam distillation, or cold-pressing) it’s called an essential oil.

How do essential oils help us in everyday life?

Essential oils contain specific chemical constituents that can provide immense support to our body’s own natural ability to heal and rejuvenate. From common ailments to more serious health conditions, essential oils lend powerful support to the natural healing process.

Many essential oil constituents have antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-infectious, antimicrobial, anti-tumor, anti-parasitic, antiviral, and antiseptic properties. However, while these properties have shown that they can destroy bacteria that can be harmful, they have also shown to simultaneously provide support to the immune system.

Pharmaceutical companies try to create synthetic versions of these plant-based constituents in order to create drugs that can be patented and sold for enormous profit.

However, as we know, these drugs often come with rather unpleasant side-effects, to say the least.

Essential oils are highly concentrated. For example, it takes approximately 100 rose flowers to create just two drops of rose oil. Or as another example, you would need approximately 4kgs of peppermint leaves to make just 10mls of peppermint oil.

Because essential oils are so concentrated, they can offer significant therapeutic benefit, even when used in small amounts. Every single drop is both naturally therapeutically powerful and precious.

There is incredible therapeutic power in every single drop of oil!

Essential Oils and How They Effect Our Brain, State of Mind and Physical Health

The blood-brain barrier is the protective mechanism that acts very much like a ‘filter’ between the blood and all that circulates within it and the brain. It’s role is to prevent harming substances from reaching brain tissue and cerebrospinal fluid.

A common and incorrect assumption is that all small molecules are able to cross the blood-brain barrier. However, and most surprisingly, a staggering 98% of ‘small molecule’ drugs are not able to cross the blood-brain barrier, and yet this is required in order to actually have any beneficial effect within the body. This fact should raise questions as to the effectiveness and safety of synthetic drugs as medicine.

Pure essential oils, on the other hand can and do cross the blood-brain barrier and therefore interact directly with the brain cells and neurotransmitter receptors, causing a therapeutic impact that cascades throughout every system within the body.

Essential oils are a safe, natural and effective solution to taking expensive synthetic drugs, which often come with a variety of negative and often serious side-effects.

What is so special about pure essential oils is how effectively allow you to take responsibility for looking after your health naturally. However, while they are potent and powerful, they are also gentle and easily absorbed by the human body, providing noticeable and measurable benefits to our health and well-being.

Due to their high concentration and bioavailability (how well they are absorbed by the body), even tiny amounts can have a substantial beneficial impact at the cellular level affecting every system in your body (e.g. muscular, skeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, immune and detoxification etc), even your mind and emotions, and therefore, your cortisol / stress levels.

How To Use do TERRA Essential Oils

doTERRA Petal Diffuser doTERRA Petal Diffuser Yours FREE with the Family Wellness Kit.

The Family Wellness Kit is one of our most popular kits as it comes with our 10 most popular oils as well as the beautiful petal diffuser.

One thing you may not be aware of is that you can take certain oils internally for therapeutic benefit, (such as peppermint, citrus oils and frankincense essential oil).

doTERRA Lemon Essential OilLemon essential oil in water is an excellent method of cleansing and supporting the body’s own innate detoxification processes.

However, some essential oils are safe for internal use (such as arborvitae, birch, cedarwood, cypress, eucalyptus, white fir, and wintergreen). It is advised that these particular oils be used aromatically (using a doTERRA Petal Diffuser or Vaporizer) or by applying topically on the skin.

It’s also an excellent suggestion to use the essential oils to create all-natural personal health and hygiene products such as:

– natural anti-perspirant

– fragrances / aftershave

– body soap

– shampoos and conditioners

– anti-ageing / skin care (cleansers, moisturisers, wrinkle and fine line serum etc).

They’re also for effective as natural remedies for common ailments e.g. if you have trouble sleeping / suffer from insomnia, which is a common condition.

We also use specific oils (and oil blends) aromatically, topically and internally when we need to relax and de-stress or to get better sleep (such as lavender, vetiver, and roman chamomile).

When we need a boost in energy or focus we’ll reach for peppermint, rosemary or citrus oils, or if a lift in mood and positivity is needed, oils such as bergamot and grapefruit are truly lovely.

Each oil or oil blend provides a different therapeutic effect on the body, mind and emotions.

We also use the oils as natural ‘non-toxic’, yet effective cleaning solutions (lemon, tea tree, eucalyptus and clove, as well as lemongrass essential oil are perfect choices for cleaning surfaces around the home).

We even use essential oils in cooking to add a wonderful depth of flavour to our breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks (such as rosemary, basil, oregano, black pepper, coriander and lime).

The Truth About Essential Oil Quality

One point that is very important to understand is that oils are not equal in terms of quality. In truth, the quality of essential oils in terms of its actual chemical constituents (as shown through testing such as gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, specific gravity, optical rotation, refractive index and other methods) can differ significantly among brands.

An essential oil company comparison that came out a short time ago (as well as data revealed to the public from lawsuits / court judgement) raised some questions about the possible practice of adding synthetic ‘fillers’ and similar, lesser quality oils (e.g. adding cassia oil to cinnamon bark oil) to produce much larger volume (at a cheaper price) and there reap greater profits. While this may well be an issue among suppliers in the industry, there has yet to be a case proven in a court of law. It is highly recommended that you do your due diligence, research company reports, and read lots of product reviews online about essential oils companies until you are satisfied that they are selling very high quality oils.

doTERRA never compromise on quality, when it comes to essential oil production.

I sincerely do believe that these Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) aromatic oils are the absolute best quality that you can buy. That is what makes them so incredibly potent and effective, and that is why we are so motivated to share them with the world.

Here are 2 short videos explaining why doTERRA essential oils are in a class of their own in terms of potency and purity. Find out why they are the top selling brands in the world with an office in U.K, Ireland, Australia, N.Z, USA (Utah), Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, and throughout Europe.

How are dōTERRA essential oils extracted / produced?

The oils are extracted via two methods:

1) Steam Distillation
This is the most commonly used method of extraction used throughout the world. It involves passing steam (from boiling water) through the plant material, releasing the volatile oils, and allowing them to be isolated and then harvested from the top of the water (hydrosol). It is a clean, organic way to extract aromatic compounds from plants and does not require the use of chemical solvents.

2) Cold Pressing
Also known as ‘cold expression’, this is the most common method for extracting the oils from citrus plants (such as limes, lemons, oranges and grapefruit), which are concentrated in the peel (or rind) of the fruit. It involves the use mechanical pressure to press, push and squeeze the oils out of the peel / rind, which is then collected. Just like steam distillation, cold pressing is a 100% organic method for extracting essential oils from plants.

While other aromatic oil producers choose to use inorganic methods of extraction, doTERRA International only work with trusted producers who use the above two organic methods.
